Daniel Bernard Roumain – String Quartet No. 2 "King"
George Walker – Lyric for Strings

Castle of Our Skins – a collective of artists of all kinds dedicated to advancing Black artistry through music – remembers Dr. King's legacy and his complicated life, and presents the most-performed work of an essential 20th-century American composer. Daniel Bernard Roumain's String Quartet No. 2 ("King") is a meditation on the private phone calls – intercepted by the FBI – between King and his mistresses and the women's roles in shaping the Civil Rights Movement.

George Walker's Lyric for Strings is a poignant navigation of the space between pain and hope dedicated to Walker's memories of his grandmother, who had been enslaved; her grandson grew up to be the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music and emerged as one of the most-honored American composers of the late 20th century.

The broadcast will take place at 7:30pm Eastern / 4:30pm Pacific.

(Rescheduled to Thursday, Feb 18, 2021 and recorded at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA in Boston, MA.)
