Richard Strauss – Elektra, Op. 58

The king of Mycenae has finally returned home after a bloody war, only to be murdered by his wife and her lover. And witness to it all was his daughter Elektra.

Now, consumed with thoughts of vengeance, she plots the downfall of a queen in Richard Strauss’s fiery one-act opera Elektra.

A jarring modernist work based on Greek mythology, Elektra captures the oppressive cruelty of a court run through bloodshed—and the madness it inspires in one of its princesses. The San Francisco Chronicle hails the opera as “a tour de force of musical bravura and theatrical inventiveness,” featuring conductor Henrik Nánási “ in an unforgettable company debut.”

Soprano Christine Goerke stars in the title role, a “magnificent star turn” that boasts “volleys of voluminous and perfectly tuned sound.” Director Keith Warner’s production blurs the line between past and present, myth, and reality, with a cast including stars like Adrianne Pieczonka, Alfred Walker, and Michaela Martens.

See it this weekend, when Elektra streams for free from Saturday, July 24 at 10am Pacific, until Sunday, July 25 at 11:59pm Pacific.
