Neil Welch — Selected works
John Teske — Selected works

For the fourth year, John Teske and Neil Welch present music among the trees in Seattle, joined by local musicians. The ensemble will perform a number of short works, with room for improvisation to respond to the natural environment, starting at 7:30pm and ending as the sun sets at 8:32pm that evening. Previous years have included performances by soloists, string quartets and mixed ensembles, including composed pieces and free improvisation.

The location is not made public. Attendees should email john [at] johnteskemusic.com for directions. The walk to the performance space takes about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. After the performance, the audience and musicians will walk out as a group. Flashlights are encouraged.

Artist information

Seattle-based composer John Teske writes contemporary concert music for soloists, chamber groups, and chamber orchestra. Founder of the Broken Bow Ensemble and a series of “any ensemble” performances (featuring music written for flexible instrumentation), he focuses on enhancing the listener experience, utilizing extended techniques and guided improvisation to create pieces that are well-crafted while maintaining a human and organic feel. His recent work includes site-specific performances in Seattle parks and at the Seattle Center, Space Weather Listening Booth (a hybrid electroacoustic installation and acoustic performance piece in collaboration with Nat Evans), and compositions for chamber orchestra supported by a grant from the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Recently he was named the new curator of the Seattle Composers' Salon. John graduated from the University of Washington, where he studied with Joël-François Durand, Juan Pampin and Josh Parmenter.

Saxophonist Neil Welch is hell-bent on creating music of lasting importance. His solo and collaborative projects mirror his explorative approach to the saxophone. “An impassioned tenor player, he combines mysticism with ferocity” (Downbeat).
