Adam Stern, conductor

Gabrieli – Canzonas for Brass
Zimmermann – Sinfonie in einem Satz
Mahler – Symphony No. 1 in D, "Titan"

Leonard Bernstein, generally credited with popularizing Mahler's music more than any other conductor and making it a staple in the concert-hall forever, wrote fervently of the music's "apocalyptic radiance". The Philharmonic concludes their 2015-16 season with a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, "Titan", a work that baffled audiences at its first performances and is now its composer's best-known work.

The concert will feature another major Austro-German symphony, the Sinfonie in einem Satz (Symphony in One Movement) by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, an emotionally shattering work heard in the U.S. premiere of its original version. The Philharmonic's brass section will also be spotlighted in a selection of canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli.
