Master class: John Chowning, 'Composing Music From the Inside-out'
Free (Free)
Electronic music pioneer John Chowning, Professor of Music Emeritus, Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University, with Maureen Chowning, soprano, present a lecture-demonstration showing how the capacity of computer systems 50 years ago limited composers/researchers to only one of the sound generating/processing tools that are available today: synthesis. Chowning will demonstrate how his earliest work in spatialization led to the discovery of FM synthesis in 1967 and how he used FM synthesis in his compositions – based on what was known about perception – from the inside-out.
