Fulton Street Chamber Players return to Folio for their fifth appearance. The group, composed largely of Seattle Symphony players and invited guest artists, performs in the intimate, up-close setting of Folio's Main Reading Room. Tonight's artists will be founding members Rachel Swerdlow, viola, and Walter Gray, cello. Brittany Boulding and Hal Grossman are the two violinists. Judith Cohen, a Seattle-based concert pianist, will be the pianist in the Dvořák Quintet.
The program begins with a Joseph Haydn quartet, Op. 54, No. 1, drawn from the famous set of three quartets Haydn composed in 1788 for the noted violin virtuoso Johann Tost. Haydn is the master and originator of the string quartet. Antonin Dvořák's Piano Quintet in A, Op. 81, is one of the supreme masterworks of chamber music. It was composed in 1887 and is rich in Czech-inspired folk tunes. The beloved second movement is a Dumka, a form of alternating elegy and sprightly music that Dvořák made his own.
