The Seattle Choral Company, led by its founding director Freddie Coleman, continues its 35th concert season with “Peaceable Kingdom: The American 20th Century.”
Randall Thompson’s 1936 choral cycle, The Peaceable Kingdom, was a groundbreaking musical statement for a cappella choir. Aaron Copland’s 1921 suite, Four Motets, dates from student days with the famed Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Leonard Bernstein studied with both Thompson and Copland, and argued that both of them “wanted music to mean something to people.” Bernstein’s harmonically vibrant Missa Brevis, written at the suggestion of Robert Shaw, is remarkable for its rhythmic and dynamic intensity.
