Haydn – String Quartet, Op. 76, No. 2 "Quinten"
Sibelius – String Quartet, Op. 56 "Voces intimae"
The Fulton Street Chamber Players return to Folio to open their third season. The group, formed in 2016 by cellist Walter Gray and violist Rachel Swerdlow, perform in the round, give personal insights into the music, and mingle with the audience for a wine reception afterward. Violinists Artur Girsky and Natasha Bazhanov, both members of the Seattle Symphony, will join Gray and Swerdlow on the stage. The program includes Josef Haydn's "Quinten" Quartet, opus 76, no. 2. This work of 1797, is drawn from the last complete set of string quartets composed by Haydn, often considered the founder of the form. The name "quinten" refers to the motif of falling fifths that opens the work. Also on the program is Jean Sibelius's Quartet opus 56, "Voces Intimae." This is the one quartet by the mature Sibelius, composed in 1909. The phrase, "voces intimae" refers to inner or intimate voices and derives from a marginal notation by the composer.
