Ravel – String Quartet in F major
The Fulton Street Chamber Players, composed of Seattle Symphony players and invited guests, opens their third season at Folio with a Mozart string quintet, paired with Maurice Ravel's beloved Quartet in F major. Walter Gray, cello, and Rachel Swerdlow, viola, are the founding members of the group. They will be joined by Jeannie Yablonsky and Blayne Barnes, violins, and Laura Renz, viola. These concerts are performed in the round, with artist/audience reception to follow.
Mozart's String Quintet in D major, K. 593, was written in 1790, and is an experimental work with many echoes of Beethoven. Ravel's String Quartet in F major was composed in 1903, when Ravel at the age of 28 was just emerging as one of the supreme French composers. It reflects classical form as well as the striking harmonic advances of an earlier Debussy quartet.
